My journey as a maths teacher 4

Mathematics is the science of recognising, understanding, appreciating, creating and using patterns in day to day life, business, sciences, work life, technology.

Introduction to the world of reading My late mother was fond of reading. I vividly recall, in late 1960s, when I was 8-10 years old, we were in a small town called Garoth in Madhya Pradesh. It is a district place now. At that time, she had subscribed to some library scheme run by Hind Pocket Book from Delhi. Under that scheme, she was sent books for reading and the next lot was sent on receiving the first back.

That was my first exposure to the world of reading. I'm truly amused and amazed by the way marketing forces work. In one of the books, of course black and white, I read about some machines in the US that help in washing clothes, cleaning utensils, kept the food cold for long time. And by the time I started married life, all had those machines right in their homes. And now that my daughters are settling in family life, multiple machines, TV sets are getting normal. But, that love for reading sparked by Aai (mother is called Aai in Marathi)  has remained intact till date. Although it has been substantially complemented by watching videos, writing for others to read, recording own video / audio,  I still like to read.

I believe early exposure to a wide variety of topics helps in developing a thinking beyond the immediate need attitude which is the Step I in developing a long term, research, perspective. Developing critical thinking, design thinking, computational thinking all are call outs of your ability to think beyond the moment. Developing perspective, vision, systems, all invariably assume good reading skills.

Beginning from reading simple texts to reading, interpreting  people, situations, you start becoming a different person and even be an influencer too..

But, it all begins from home. So, give your kids, yourself, enough loose rope, time, to evolve, blossom into your own potential and not to be like someone else.

I sincerely thank my parents who never put any load of expectations and gave me space to grow into my own self.

  2. Now after reading this article I recall days of my childhood when my mother made me read my textbooks of Hindi, as well as she bought some books of Marathi also. Really parents' efforts to inculcate good reading habits in children not only help
to develop a good vocabulary but also an ability to critical as well as rational thinking.

  3. Sir.. Very relevant advice 😊. Now a days almost children are in a virtual world of happiness where their brain is idle.when we reading books, we can create our own imaginary world where our brain has to do some work. Thus we began to study to think about it.
Reading habit is really worthwhile for our life. I second your opinion sir.πŸ˜ŠπŸ™and also will make my children to do so.πŸ₯°.

Mathematics and Life 23 Improving school mathematics 8

Improving school mathematics 8 The role of parents 2 Mathematics is the science of recognising, understanding, appreciating, creating and using patterns in day to day life, business, sciences, work life, technology. In the last post we saw how parental influence becomes counterproductive and even limits a child's ability to perform. Now we will see what parents can do to boost a child's morale. Besides not doing unequal comparisons, expecting too much from the child, making public insults, the positive things parents can do are Give quality time to the child Encourage developing a study routine,, schedule in general Informally explain where education can take the child Accompany the child of school meetings  Besides these broad tips, using lot of love and common sense, parents can help the kid enjoy her studying maths. I also saw these videos which I guess will be very useful  9 tips to improve concentration https://youtu.be/LFIiW5BQP00 5 step formula  https://yout...

Mathematics and Life 95 Multiple Intelligences and mathematics education

Multiple Intelligences and mathematics education Background Intelligence has been the factor on which the human race takes the highest pride and feels that it has Intelligence of the highest level. It is so because only human beings have all the five senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch fully developed. Moreover, only human being have the unique ability to express ideas, feelings in their own written or spoken words. In the beginning of the 20th century a lot of research was done on human intelligence. Their types, levels, measurements, enhancement. In the early 1980s, Dr. Howard Gardener gave his theory of multiple Intelligences.  Quoting successful cases of great musicians, players, business tycoons, religious leaders who never went school, he proposed that just relying on academic Intelligence is not the way to define Intelligence and gave eight traits of distinctly different types of intelligences. They are Linguistic Intelligence - what we measure in formal e...

Mathematics and Life 45 Experiential Learning

The role of experience In the behaviour school of psychology, who treat, observe, measure only the behavioural aspects, modification in behaviour is considered learning. For example, if you are training your dog to get the ball back, it does it, it has learnt what it means to get the ball back. Closer to us, if the teacher has just taught the concept of odd and even and now asks her 10 students to arrange themselves in odd number of rows and they make five rows with two students in each, they can be seen to have learnt the concept of odd and even. With more practice, it can be further consolidated. The mega companies like Jio, Amazon, Google, Facebook and others too have what is called experiential marketing as their backbone. Using, AI and applying big data, machine learning, techniques they study you and provide experiences you have been preferring to choose.  In this video, the high energy, very motivated friend of mine Dr. Sapna Agrawal takes us to the journey of providing exper...
