Mathematics and Life 62 12 cells of mathematics

 12 cells of mathematics

Background As discussed in one of recent posts My 2 cents of creativity, I have been exploring various ways to make mathematics teaching - learning interesting.

Today I will present a breakthrough way of looking at the mathematics curriculum till standard 10th. I am taking standard 10th because like it or hate it, in all Boards in India essentially mathematics is compulsory till standard 10th. There are some exceptions like the ICSE Board that allows mathematics as optional even from standard 6th. But I seen those kids who left maths way too early, shivering when they find maths till standard to be integral part of every competitive examination of repute.

Arithmetic

Geometry

Algebra

Reasoning

Elementary

I to V

I to V

Language sense

Verbal

Intermediate

VI to VIII

VI to VIII

VI to VIII

Non verbal

Advance

IX and X

IX and X

IX and X

Mifror, water image etc

Here, the entire content of mathematics up to standard 10th has been broken into 12 cells as shown above.

The most important additions are the introduction of Elementary Algebra through developing language sense. Here, the attempt would be to develop a bridge for transition from Arithmetic to Algebra which is a real mystery for most students.

Likewise, introduction of Reasoning skills throughout the curriculum from standard I through X will immensely help develop the ambitious goals of developing mathematical thinking, critical thinking, computational thinking….as envisaged in the National Education Policy

This framework will be developed into an operational plan. All are invited to explore idea exchange, collaboration possibilities.

Mathematics and Life 23 Improving school mathematics 8

Improving school mathematics 8 The role of parents 2 Mathematics is the science of recognising, understanding, appreciating, creating and using patterns in day to day life, business, sciences, work life, technology. In the last post we saw how parental influence becomes counterproductive and even limits a child's ability to perform. Now we will see what parents can do to boost a child's morale. Besides not doing unequal comparisons, expecting too much from the child, making public insults, the positive things parents can do are Give quality time to the child Encourage developing a study routine,, schedule in general Informally explain where education can take the child Accompany the child of school meetings  Besides these broad tips, using lot of love and common sense, parents can help the kid enjoy her studying maths. I also saw these videos which I guess will be very useful  9 tips to improve concentration https://youtu.be/LFIiW5BQP00 5 step formula  https://yout...

Mathematics and Life 45 Experiential Learning

The role of experience In the behaviour school of psychology, who treat, observe, measure only the behavioural aspects, modification in behaviour is considered learning. For example, if you are training your dog to get the ball back, it does it, it has learnt what it means to get the ball back. Closer to us, if the teacher has just taught the concept of odd and even and now asks her 10 students to arrange themselves in odd number of rows and they make five rows with two students in each, they can be seen to have learnt the concept of odd and even. With more practice, it can be further consolidated. The mega companies like Jio, Amazon, Google, Facebook and others too have what is called experiential marketing as their backbone. Using, AI and applying big data, machine learning, techniques they study you and provide experiences you have been preferring to choose.  In this video, the high energy, very motivated friend of mine Dr. Sapna Agrawal takes us to the journey of providing exper...

Mathematics and Life 87 You know maths worksheet - 3

You know maths worksheet - 3 Answers to You know maths worksheet 2 True  2. True 3. True 4. True 5. True 6. True 7. True This was just a very basic revision of geometry terminology. Since geometry is unfortunately neglected across the nation and across the curriculum too, I have designed just a concept brushing, easy going test. Today we will discuss some questions which are a mix of basic arithmetic and basic reasoning ability A leap year comes in 4 years. True / False My friend said I have a one acre plot. Seeing me confused he elaborated, it is nearly 45,000 sq ft. Was she right ? I went shopping and saw an item labelled 2000/-. I also read it had a discount of 10% for the festive season and an additional 10% discount on that purchase as it was their Foundation day. I paid 1600/-. Was I right ? A purchased one thing in 100/-. He sold it to B for 125/-, who sold it to C for 150/-. Who made more profit A or B ? Why ? Or both made the same profit ? Five men can complete a wo...
