You know maths 2
Background Recently we saw how important it is to develop a fresh understanding of what is it to know maths ?
I propose a very wide based, inclusive, definition of mathematics as the science of recognising, understanding, appreciating, using and creating patterns in immediate surroundings, day to day life, sciences, business, research, agriculture and every other facets of human endeavour.
Putting in simple words, I would call someone mathematically literate, irrespective of age, education, designation, if he can see opposite walls of a room being parallel (may not know any theorem), if he understand that all buildings (except one) are perpendicular to the ground, if you have to cover three points by travelling going direct will be shorter than passing through all three points, the product 5643 x 1256 will be more than 5643 x 999 just by looking, if she can plan a small party budget, if by looking at it she can tell how much milk is there is the milk pot ? Or what is the weight of the mobile in her hand……
We need to first see, feel, play with maths concepts ourselves and then pass the baton to the youngers.
Content of the blog - Although essentially it will be demand driven, I plan to keep some simple regular features to be there like
taking one basic math concept, explaining it, giving examples, non examples where possible, trying to relate with daily life experiences.
giving examples to develop language - maths interface
tips for parents
tips of readers wanting to be teachers
announcements about courses, products, services
simple maths problems to make all feel You Know Maths

Today's blog make us realise that knowledge of mathematics also lies in mathematical sense. Those unskilled workers, homemakers, green grocers, florists, vendors, those who couldn't be privileged with formal schooling but, we see them to be good at ( profit or loss) mathematics sense, though they themselves always have a complex for not being privileged of formal schooling. Not only for them but for all of us developing mathematical sense should be the first priority instead of teaching them how to calculate.
