The Perspective:

In this series of articles, posts, I will try to elaborate various key aspects which in my opinion constitute mathematics education. It includes the why, what, when, where, how, by whom etc of teaching - learning mathematics, besides tips and tricks to make the teaching - learning more interactive and engaging.

Focus and purpose

I will delimit the discussion to mathematics education till standard 10th. Mainly for two reasons - it being the foundation stage for future maths and maths being compulsory till standard 10th. Even those students who, for various reasons, do not score well in maths also have to carry the subject till standard 10th. So, we need to be more cautious in handling maths content till standard 10th.

These posts will be useful for someone wanting to take up mathematics teaching a career. The posts will discuss all concepts, processes, proofs etc related to mathematics curriculum till standard 10th of CBSE School. As per the National Education Policy also, sooner than later, all schools will have the same course.

These posts will also be useful for young parents or grandparents wishing to teach maths to their own kids. Reduced mobility has forced us to find solutions around us. Besides strengthening interpersonal bonds, teaching your own kids will save hard earned money too, besides making you a popular maths teacher in the vicinity.

Language of the posts will be kept as simple and direct as possible. It will not be much scholarly. Emphasis will be on making the concept, the process, clear through day to day use of the concept as it is one of my convictions that students don't like maths as they do not see it or feel it happening around them. I will strive to create situations, relate theory with its relevant application. Like, while discussing data tabulation, we will read phone bills, electricity bills etc for.

Participatory sport Like all skills - swimming, cycling, driving, cooking, learning maths skills also needs actual participation. Reading posts, passing to the next post, may make you good at reading about maths. But it is only actual doing, solving, maths that will go a long way in your being a skilled maths student and or teacher in the long run.

My Journey as a Maths Teacher – Part 2

🧒 From Grade 3 to Guiding Future Teachers It gives me immense pleasure to be of some help to my younger mathematics teaching colleagues like Shruti Goel, Laly, Preeti Garg, Misha Nambiar, Rajendra Paliwal , and many others—across subjects and across schools. But things weren’t always this way. 📘 The Indore Phase – Simplicity, Struggle, and Silent Growth After leaving Mumbai in 1988, I served as a school teacher at Choithram School, Indore , till 1992. I even taught Grades 3 to 5 in a single session . Yet, the spirit was always high. I loved taking classes, creating activity sheets, and even wrote articles I mailed to U.S. education journals —long before emails were common. If there was one shortcoming I admit, it was in checking large stacks of answer books. I often rationalised, “I’m a creative person, so it’s okay.” In hindsight, it wasn’t—but the honesty helped me grow. 🔄 The Decade of Churn (1988–1997) It was a whirlwind decade. Imagine this combination: Ph.D. ...
