Improving school mathematics 7

The role of parents - 1

Mathematics is the science of recognising, understanding, appreciating, creating and using patterns in day to day life, business, sciences, work life, technology.

In the Indian society, joint families are still not uncommon. There are many people in the family  “taking care” of the same child in their own ways. They interact, influence, interfere with the child's growth and development in different ways. It is also not uncommon to see delegation of responsibilities in the family and teaching kids comes to one family member. Now, how the family children look at studies, maths in particular, depends on how this person develops it.

Early fear / liking Children are imitators, they treat their immediate boss very seriously and that exactly is the opportunity or threat as well. Parents often discuss they were not good at maths, they share bad stories of their maths teachers resulting in the innocent child becoming apprehensive. Please avoid that.

Comparison of scores Comparing kids’ scores, between siblings or friends is another major harm parents do the kid’s evolving mind. Many children have higher mental abilities, they blossom once algebra starts or even later. Give them space. Let them evolve.

Public reprimand In order to establish their authority, many parents resort to publicly insult their kid in home, functions, parent-teacher meetings on any matter. More so on math scores. In revolt many children stop attempting math, although they could.

Too much expectations from a child puts her into tremendous pressure. Coupled with public reprimand, unequal comparison, it becomes really unbearable for the kid. Sending very young, 3-4 year old also, for tuitions to catch up with school is a very wrong practice.

Blindly following under peer pressure Under terrible peer pressure, due to marketing, parents admit their kids to courses which are beyond the child capacity. Like a child who does not have math aptitude but is very good artist is first made to take math in 11th and is then sent for IIT Coaching. Eventually, he ends life or gets into drugs, other abuses….. with the same money, time, effort, he would have done a great art course.

Are you or some of your friends in such a situation ? I will be more than happy to guide, completely free advice.

A student knows every effort of his / her parents. Like they are earning money for him, they are spending money for him, they are spoiling their health for them even though they are not healthy. Yet why he can't give full concentration to his studies? What remedies we can suggest gor such children?

Mathematics and Life 87 You know maths worksheet - 3

You know maths worksheet - 3 Answers to You know maths worksheet 2 True  2. True 3. True 4. True 5. True 6. True 7. True This was just a very basic revision of geometry terminology. Since geometry is unfortunately neglected across the nation and across the curriculum too, I have designed just a concept brushing, easy going test. Today we will discuss some questions which are a mix of basic arithmetic and basic reasoning ability A leap year comes in 4 years. True / False My friend said I have a one acre plot. Seeing me confused he elaborated, it is nearly 45,000 sq ft. Was she right ? I went shopping and saw an item labelled 2000/-. I also read it had a discount of 10% for the festive season and an additional 10% discount on that purchase as it was their Foundation day. I paid 1600/-. Was I right ? A purchased one thing in 100/-. He sold it to B for 125/-, who sold it to C for 150/-. Who made more profit A or B ? Why ? Or both made the same profit ? Five men can complete a wo...

Mathematics and Life 45 Experiential Learning

The role of experience In the behaviour school of psychology, who treat, observe, measure only the behavioural aspects, modification in behaviour is considered learning. For example, if you are training your dog to get the ball back, it does it, it has learnt what it means to get the ball back. Closer to us, if the teacher has just taught the concept of odd and even and now asks her 10 students to arrange themselves in odd number of rows and they make five rows with two students in each, they can be seen to have learnt the concept of odd and even. With more practice, it can be further consolidated. The mega companies like Jio, Amazon, Google, Facebook and others too have what is called experiential marketing as their backbone. Using, AI and applying big data, machine learning, techniques they study you and provide experiences you have been preferring to choose.  In this video, the high energy, very motivated friend of mine Dr. Sapna Agrawal takes us to the journey of providing exper...

Mathematics and Life 1 Introduction to the article series by Beyond Abacus

Purpose of the series is to explain various basic mathematics concepts in simple language connecting concepts to examples from life, business, science, day to day life. It will be our special emphasise to develop what Dr. Prakash Moghe calls the math - language interface. That is, showing similarity between the words used in daily language and mathematics like point, ray, interest and so on......     Audience This series of posts is for everyone who wants to understand, learn, revise, apply maths concepts, formulae, and wants to develop Problem Solving Approach, critical thinking, design thinking, and mathematical thinking. Agewise , from age 6 to the time one wants to learn / revise / teach basic maths will find these posts useful in their own ways. Frequency of posts At least one post a day has been planned. Length of posts Each post will be self content, so will be long enough to elaborate the point and short enough to keep the reader engaged. The reach Each post wil...
