Improving school mathematics 7
The role of parents - 1
Mathematics is the science of recognising, understanding, appreciating, creating and using patterns in day to day life, business, sciences, work life, technology.
In the Indian society, joint families are still not uncommon. There are many people in the family “taking care” of the same child in their own ways. They interact, influence, interfere with the child's growth and development in different ways. It is also not uncommon to see delegation of responsibilities in the family and teaching kids comes to one family member. Now, how the family children look at studies, maths in particular, depends on how this person develops it.
Early fear / liking Children are imitators, they treat their immediate boss very seriously and that exactly is the opportunity or threat as well. Parents often discuss they were not good at maths, they share bad stories of their maths teachers resulting in the innocent child becoming apprehensive. Please avoid that.
Comparison of scores Comparing kids’ scores, between siblings or friends is another major harm parents do the kid’s evolving mind. Many children have higher mental abilities, they blossom once algebra starts or even later. Give them space. Let them evolve.
Public reprimand In order to establish their authority, many parents resort to publicly insult their kid in home, functions, parent-teacher meetings on any matter. More so on math scores. In revolt many children stop attempting math, although they could.
Too much expectations from a child puts her into tremendous pressure. Coupled with public reprimand, unequal comparison, it becomes really unbearable for the kid. Sending very young, 3-4 year old also, for tuitions to catch up with school is a very wrong practice.
Blindly following under peer pressure Under terrible peer pressure, due to marketing, parents admit their kids to courses which are beyond the child capacity. Like a child who does not have math aptitude but is very good artist is first made to take math in 11th and is then sent for IIT Coaching. Eventually, he ends life or gets into drugs, other abuses….. with the same money, time, effort, he would have done a great art course.
Are you or some of your friends in such a situation ? I will be more than happy to guide, completely free advice.
